Plaza Theatre opened in late 1936 with the world premiere of Camille (1936)  starring Greta Garbo. Built by Julia Carnell, the theatre was designed by architect firm Schenck & Williams in an Atmospheric style with a Spanish village theme. Restored and renovated theatre reopening in December 2025.

Working under Oak Hallow Restoration, I was the lead restorer at the Plaza Theatre. I developed the finish samples to Architectural Resources Group’s guidelines under Jason Currie, Architect. The proscenium arch and lobby ceilings were cleaned, repaired and then meticulosly inpainted to match the surrounding original finish.

The interior Spanish village the walls of the auditorium were overpainted in the 90’s a salmon pink. After removal of non historical elements, I discovered the original finish and colors, now a goldenrod and slate blue/green scumble. Using an old photograph of the interior, I was able to age the village with drips and shadows.

This renaissance is powered by a visionary partnership among Oak View Group, the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation, and the City of Palm Springs, transforming a once‑shuttered landmark into a dynamic cultural hub for future generations.  The painstaking restoration—guided by Architectural Resources Group—has revealed original 1936 details while adding state‑of‑the‑art lighting, sound, cooling systems, upgraded dressing rooms, a new lobby bar, and museum displays that celebrate the theatre’s storied history.  Guests now enjoy extra‑comfortable seating, improved amenities, and an atmosphere that seamlessly blends historic character with modern innovation.
